Analysis: The Remnant Pieces — Part I

It hit me that, if I want you to read my work, I need to make you care. So let’s do that.

I do best in a controlled environment. As a child, this was easily had given my lack of siblings.

Of course, I didn’t always have that degree of control, particularly when I was away from home. Childhood is a time when one is called upon to go places where one might not go given a free choice, which is a highly articulate way of saying that you get dragged places. Everyone gets dragged places for holidays; add to that sporting events and other weekend getaways, and I found myself out of that controlled environment about once a month or two.

So once every month or two, I took an abrupt transition from a house with three people to one with eight to fourteen people, including as many as five younger children. This was a bit much to take in, and surviving these sojourns meant locating some quiet place to escape from the noise and chaos. Sometimes this was very easy; other times it required a bit of ingenuity and subterfuge.
